How Much Local History Do You Know?
Piedmont’s story began in 1850 as part of the vast Rancho San Antonio, owned by the Peralta family. The area remained largely undeveloped until 1870, when Walter Blair purchased over 800 acres and built the Piedmont Springs Hotel, a luxurious retreat where wealthy San Franciscans escaped to “the country” to enjoy the spring waters believed to have curative properties. Blair also established the Broadway and Piedmont Railroad, connecting the area via horsecars.
In 1877, the Piedmont Land Company was formed and hired landscape engineer William Hammond Hall to design the community’s avenues and subdivide the land. The first land auction took place that same April. Though the famous Piedmont Springs Hotel burned down in 1892 due to a chimney fire, the community continued to grow and attract notable residents.
During the early 1900s, Piedmont became home to a vibrant community of artists and writers known as the “Bohemians of Piedmont.” Jack London lived here with his family and wrote “Call of the Wild” in the hills. He was joined by fellow creative spirits including George Sterling, Xavier Martinez, and Charmian Kittredge, whom he later married.
Following the 1906 San Francisco earthquake, Piedmont’s population quadrupled as residents fled to the perceived safety of the hills. The community officially incorporated as a city in 1907 after two close elections. By the 1920s, Piedmont had earned the nickname “City of Millionaires” for having the highest concentration of millionaires per square mile in the United States. The city adopted its charter in 1923, and many of the grand mansions built during this era still grace the hillsides today, testament to Piedmont’s rich architectural heritage.
